Trauma is, in many ways, part of life itself. By definition, trauma is an experience in which a person faces real or perceived danger to life, or a threat to physical integrity. If we look at it from that perspective, even birth can be seen as our first trauma. From that moment on, it becomes an inseparable part of human experience: the hunger and crying of a newborn, separation from the mother, the end of breastfeeding, and later parenting — where, despite the best intentions, parents unconsciously pass on their own unprocessed traumas through transgenerational patterns. Early childhood brings new challenges such as kindergarten, school, and the first separations. Many of the patterns we unconsciously adopt between ages 0–7, a period we often barely remember, continue to repeat throughout adulthood. In this way, we sometimes recreate familiar wounds without realizing it. This is why we can say that trauma — whether direct or indirect, conscious or unconscious, inherited or lived — shapes every one of us. Even the most caring parents cannot fully shield a child from trauma, because it is woven into life itself. Trauma with a Capital “T” While everyone encounters everyday forms of trauma, there are also more severe experiences that leave deep marks. These include: •Growing up with alcoholism or addiction in the family •Psychological, physical, or sexual abuse •Abduction, captivity, or trafficking •Mockery, humiliation, neglect, or rejection •Loss of loved ones •Natural disasters or war Such experiences can, over time, lead to lasting emotional and physical difficulties. How Trauma Affects Us Traumas vary in intensity, duration, and frequency, as well as our defenses - and in childhood our ability to defend ourselves is minimal. Therefore, childhood traumas are deeply embedded in our understanding of reality. Each person reacts differently, but no one goes through life without being, at some point, “moved from their center.” That means that after facing a trauma, in order to protect ourselves, we develop defense mechanisms that help us survive, but these same defenses can later distort our perception of reality, limit our relationships, and harm our mental and psysical health. When these patterns begin to overwhelm us — when survival strategies start to feel like chains — it may be time to seek help. Therapy offers a safe way to return as close as possible to our inner balance, to reconnect with our authentic self before trauma reshaped our life.
